At Cornell: The 2008 season was a breakout year for Smith as he broke off the shackles of a rough sophomore year to finish fourth at the indoor Heps and third at the outdoor meet. Saving his best indoor jumping for the indoor championships, he improved all the way to 6-10 1/2, a nearly three-inch PR, and then went 6-11 during the outdoor season to qualify for both the IC4As and the NCAA regional championships. Harnessing his talents has taken time and faith in himself. Technically, he has developed an excellent run and needs to develop consistency to boom jumps which will lead him to his ultimate goal of 7-0. Look for further improvements in 2009. He has the ability to do it.
At Cardinal O’Hara: Smith was a league champion and an all-state honoree in the high jump.
Personal: Jim Smith is the son of Jim and Joan Smith.
